lyrics

Leonard

Heading back from a wedding in the northern pines
A perfect day for a Sunday drive
I saw an old man standing on the side
I stopped and I asked him if he’s like a ride

He said my name’s Leonard Morisette
Just like the singer in case you’re wondering how it’s spelled
I’m sad to say that we’re not related
I bought a few of her tapes but I hardly played them

I guess I’m more a Blue Rodeo fan
Met them a few times through a friend
I appreciate what you’re doing for me
Maybe I could tell you a story

Did you hear the one about the Mountain Lion
Not the only time I was close to dying
I was in my bag pretending to sleep
When he sniffed me from head to feet

But he curled right up like we was common folk
So I sat with that cat and I had a smoke
Now most of you would have been crying
So you tell me if he’s half lyon

Leonard, I hoped I picked you up on time
You were counting passing cars
I was number ninety nine
Leonard, the pleasure was all mine
I hope you find a job
I’m sure that you’ll do fine
And I’m so glad I didn’t pass you by

He was Alberta bound looking for work
He made his living digging in the dirt
He didn’t have much in the way of schooling
But give him a Backhoe boy and he ain’t fooling

He’ll be okay he says he knows the bosses
His treaty card says he’s from Mistawasis
But Leonard is from The Eagle Mountain Band
I’m glad that I could lend him a hand

He’s been laid up from a few years back
A big rig track it knocked Leonard flat
Picture him lying on the shoulder
When he woke up he was five days older

Leonard, I hoped I picked you up on time
You were counting passing cars
I was number ninety nine
Leonard, the pleasure was all mine
I hope you find a job
I’m sure that you’ll do fine
And I’m so glad I didn’t pass you by

Well ya just can’t keep old Leonard down
You don’t believe me man check this shit out
One day he was riding bare back on his horse
As fast as he could straight through that forrest

His horse his the brakes when he rounded the bend
It stopped so short man it flipped old Len
From the spot on the ground right there
He could have hugged that grizzly bear

Old Leonard, I hoped I picked you up on time
You were counting passing cars
I was number ninety nine
Leonard, the pleasure was all mine
I hope you find a job
I’m sure that you’ll do fine
And I’m so glad I didn’t pass you by
